    Buy those made of clay.

Clay or composite are the best. Please review this link for info on costs and what to look for both in quality (typically by weight - 9, 11.5 or 13.5 grams) and quantity (300 or 500),and by cost ($25 to over $150) it will help you to narrow your field first.

    To help you with quntity:
How Many Poker Chips To Buy
Depending on the size of your game, you’re going to need to stock up on different amounts of chips. I recommend:
    –200 Chips for 3-4 players
    –400 Chips for 5-6 players
    –600 Chips for 7-8 players
    –800 Chips for 8-10+ players

Then finally a place to get them. You cannot beat online prices, so you need a brand or brands to look for. You want a recommendation?”

500 Super Diamond 11.5 Gram Metal-Core Poker Chips
These poker chips are the metal-core composite variety, which I actually like the best, even though clay is the most popular chip variety these days. I like the feel of these durable chips and I find it easier to shuffle and play with them than clay chips. This set also includes 2 decks of plastic playing cards, 5 dice, a dealer button, and comes in an aluminum poker chip case. The 5 color chips aren’t printed with a value, so each can stand for whatever amount you choose each night.

They are not a lot of money. If you are wealthy, then this:
They are only $925 plus shipping.

So, find what you think he would like (ask his friends!) then I suggest EBAY. FInd some to bid and the cheapest “buy-it-now” set that you want, put cheaper bids on the biddable ones, then, if you do not get any and time runs short, do the buy it now one!

    Have a great time shopping!!!!

Clay, 11.5 grams are nice. 500 chips are a good amount to start out with. How much are you wanting to spend? You can buy sets at places like Walmart or Target. You can also get some good deals on ebay.

Don’t get a chap plastic set, they just don’t have the right feel to them. You want to get clay or clay composite chips which is what the casinos use. You may also want to consider getting him some high quality plastic playing cards, their feel and durability is far superior to the cheap plastic coated cardboard cards that most people are used to. You can find both at the link below.

Hmm. I’d save the money on the special case. After all, it’s just a box that you hold the chips in. Spend the money on the chips themselves. You will regret buying cheaper chips and a costly box.

Have a look at this guide to poker equipment: There’s links to online suppliers with all sizes and quality sets. I’d go for 500-chip sets if money is no object. They come usually in metal carrying cases, which are pretty cool-looking anyway as well as hard-wearing.
