Is it possible to cheat in a real poker game through slieght of hand shoveling?

I play in a weekly poker game with some guys and there is this one guy who always seems to have GREAT hands when he’s the dealer. I would say 90% of the time I go heads up with him when he’s dealer, I lose to a pretty good hand. Aside from this, he also is very loose on asking others to cut the deck when he deals. Which everyone else does.

So the question is, is it possible to stack the deck in your favor if you’re the dealer? I can see insuring yourself one good hold card but to make it so that you had two good hold cards and a good lay down on the table just seems impossible to me. Just wondering if I’m either paranoid or should stop going heads to heads with this guy.

This is for Texas Hold’em Poker. Thanks.
Damn it! I was actually hoping the answer would be negative but inside I knew better.

Is there anything I should look for then when he’s dealing? Is it possible to cheat even if I cut the deck? I try to do that but I don’t always get to it before he deals or I’m in the middle of a conversation with another friend. Thanks in advance everyone.

Oh yes…If you practice (a lot) it can be done.

It is very possible that someone is stacking the deck. But it takes a hell of a lot of skill to do. The dealer would need to locate the good cards and hide them somewhere where the shuffle won’t get them. He then needs to place them somewhere where he can deal them to himself. One such method is to place them at the bottom of the deck and when he deals to himself he pulls the card off the bottom of the deck and deals it to himself.

One way to protect against this is to ensure you are using a cut card. This makes it harder to access the bottom of the deck. Also you should insist that EVERYONE allows another player to cut the deck after it has been shuffled.

The odds are your friend is not stacking the deck. It requires months of intensive practice to become that good at it. The average amateur poker player does not have that kind of skill.

2 ways to do it. and easy to spot. is he smooth and seem like an expert while shuffling. if he is great at it potentially he can isolate 2 good cards from the bottom. probably not doing this because if he is he probably good at poker or just simply better than the competition. if he is a cheat he is keeping two good cards. when it is your deal count the cards. if anybody says anything simply say you haven’t seen the suicide king all night. sorry to say this but i don’t think you are a good player and here is why…the 2 cards each player receives are called hole cards not “‘hold cards”. you claim you lose 90% against him. 90% is not likely and a good player would know the exact percentage and you don’t. 2 other things 1) you are so engrossed in a conversation you don’t pay attention to basic rules of the game. your turn to cut…..2) also basic rules; the cards must be cut. track your play for the first hour. you should be playing no more than 25% of the hands and 80% of those hands when you are the dealer.

If you have any question about him. Next time when you get to cut the deck pick up the cards and count them.( just to make sure there all there)

When I play with my friends, we do three things to ensure there is no cheating like the kind you described. 1. we count the cards everytime. this takes the place of what a casino does when they wash the cards. 2. we use an automatic shuffler. and finally 3. We use a cut card every time. The person that deals cannot deal until the cut card is put in the deck and then cut that way. The cut is never handled by the dealer, as one can “mechanic” that as well.

Look for him holding the cards with any finger on the small edges of the deck as this is not normal. try it your self and see if it comfortable. This is a mechanics grip = and is a sure sign of cheating. Ask the dealer to use one hand to deal. It may take longer, but it is way harder to cheat that way.

    Thry this

In any “friendly” game , demand a rule that cards MUST be cut , no tapping the deck ,etc. CUT THE CARDS !!!
Use two decks that any player can put into play and then
count the cards. Change the seating arrangements each week. Sounds pretty cynical, but remember money and ego are the stakes.

If you suspect that he is cheating then you should watch him carefully. He could be dealing seconds or he could be dealing from the bottom of the deck as well. There are lots of ways to cheat in cards so just keep a close eye on him.
